Though not helped by the ‘graveyard slot’ of performing first, the BBC’s selection of 76-year-old Engelbert Humperdinck to represent the UK in the annual Eurovision Song Contest in Baku (Azerbaijan) last year was one which was doomed from the start (even if a similar plan worked wonders for 2nd-placed Russia), as he finished 25th in the final (second-last in a field of 26 singers).
While most broadcasters are probably competing to not win the contest in the current financial climate (due to the winning country earning the prize of organising the following year’s event), fans understandably desire a less embarrasing position in the standings in 2013, so the BBC needed to review what went wrong and come back with the obvious solution of someone not so old. Hiring someone just 15 years younger was probably not what most people had in mind.
However, 61-year-old Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler will be the one to represent the UK in Malmo (Sweden) this May, in a decision confirmed two weeks ahead of original schedule yesterday (7 March).
Tyler is best known for her songs in the 80′s, including “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”, but despite reportedly having some some recent success performing in France and Germany (with the ’European appeal’ seemingly a primary reason for her backing), has not released a single for 8 years.
That will change, however, with the song she is entering, “Believe In Me” (written by Desmond Child, Lauren Christy and Christopher Braide, and produced by David Huff), set to be offered as part of her upcoming album ‘Rocks and Honey’, which is aimed for release in early May (conveniently a few weeks before the contest). The full line-up of Eurovision 2013 will be confirmed within the next fortnight, with Romania, Sweden, Azerbaijan, and Moldova the only nations of the 39 to have not yet revealed their singer.
Tyler said of her participation: “I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision, and especially with such a fabulous song. I promise to give this everything that I’ve got for the UK!”
BBC ‘entertainment & events controller’ Katie Taylor noted: “Bonnie Tyler is truly a global superstar with a fantastic voice, and we are delighted she will be flying the flag for the UK in Malmö.”
An additional source summarised of the technical prospects for the singer: “She should be one of our strongest contestants in many years – her live vocal ability is tried and tested. Bonnie could easily finish in the top 10 with this power ballad. She has decades of experience so should be able to pull this off with aplomb.”
In the 58th edition of the show (taking place between 14-18 May), the UK will like every year recieve a free pass to the final as one of the ‘Big 5′ (leading financial contributors to the contest along with France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, as well as the hosts), but will Bonnie Tyler be able to put in a performance worthy of that status? Her entry (the first for the UK from a Welsh contestant since James Fox in 2004) can be seen below, along with a compilation of last year’s contest to see how she might measure up against ‘Eurovision quality’:
While it is likely to not be the only thing planned for the dates it has been scheduled on, BBC Worldwide have announced what will be one of the biggest Doctor Who celebratory events, in the form of a convention that will officially commemorate the series’ 50th anniversary.
The 3-day show, entitled the Doctor Who 50th Celebration Weekend, will begin on Friday 22 November at the ExCeL Centre in London (England), and while details such as prices and booking information are yet to be revealed for a celebration that is still over 8 months away, it is known that ’15,000 tickets’ will be made available to fans of the long-running sci-fi drama.
Ending on the Sunday of that long weekend, the event will unlike some conventions be at its strongest on the middle date (Saturday 23 November), when the actual anniversary occurs (complete with a one-off celebratory episode… in 3D), amongst what will be a number of other commemorative programmes on the BBC that day.
BBC Worldwide ‘chief brands officer’ Amanda Hill summarised: “Generations of fans young and old have been captivated by the Doctor and we’ve seen Doctor Who go from strength to strength, enjoying something of a global march over the past few years attracting new followers from Turkey to Brazil to South Korea. This year-long celebration is an opportunity for fans around the world to come together and celebrate the glorious past, present and future of Doctor Who.”
Though the sale has not yet begun, the hardcore fans of the show around the world will be waiting anxiously to purchase their convention passes, then once secured, they can make a note of the date, start their cars, and take them all the way up to 88-wrong thing? Well which one’s the better time travel franchise after all these years? You decide…
